Mixed-member electoral systems are a highly complex, and therefore extremely interesting, mechanism for determining parliamentary representation that generates patterns of electoral behaviour that are unprecedented in other systems. One of these is the so-called split-ticket voting, whereby a voter simultaneously supports a candidate and a list that has been registered by two different political parties. This article attempts to identify the scale and the most significant political consequences of split-ticket voting in New Zealand’s House of Representatives elections from 1996 to 2020. Lessons from mixed parliamentary elections in New Zealand can be successfully applied to the discussion on the reform of the electoral system for the Sejm, which has been ongoing in the Polish public space for more than three decades.
